Cello

The cello or violoncello Italian pronunciation: is a bowed (and occasionally plucked) string instrument of the violin family. Its four strings are usually tuned in perfect fifths: from low to high, C2, G2, D3 and A3. Each string is an octave lower than the viola's four strings. Music for the cello is generally written in the bass clef, with tenor clef and treble clef used for higher-range passages.

The cello, or violincello, is the second lowest of the stringed instruments. It has a warm, dark, lustrous sound and is incredibly expressive.

As with violin and viola, the cello is bowed. It sounds an octave below the viola. Fractional (different sized) cellos can be rented or purchased enabling young and small students to begin learning.

The cello is found in string, chamber, and symphony orchestras, chamber music and has also found its voice in rock music. The instrument has been around since the mid 1500s and a wealth of music has been written for this instrument.

Cello lessons are available at Accent Music Studios. We accept students from all over the lower mainland servicing mainly North Vancouver, West Vancouver, Burnaby, Coquitlam, New Westminster, Richmond and Vancouver.

Here are a couple of recordings which demonstrate the cello’s lyrical beauty.

Bach’s cello suites are some of the most iconic classical music works ever written, so much so that they have been transcribed for many other instruments.

ELGAR CELLO CONCERTO, JACQUELINE DU PRE

In addition to school orchestras, Lions Gate Youth Symphony Orchestra and West Vancouver String Orchestra provide excellent opportunities for aspiring young cellists to learn and perform. Our cello instructors will assist with any music you have to practice for orchestra.
