Double Bass

The bass is a standard member of the orchestra's string section,[2] as well as the concert band, and is featured in concertos, solo, and chamber music in Western classical music. The bass is used in a range of other genres, such as jazz, 1950s-style blues and rock and roll, rockabilly, psychobilly, traditional country music, bluegrass, tango and many types of folk music.

Double bass, or upright bass, lessons are available in North Vancouver at Accent Music Studios. Our professional bass teacher will teach you correct posture, hand positioning, finger and bowing technique plus improve your reading skills. Double bass lessons are available both in person and online, if remote lessons are preferred. Learn to play the bass, in all styles of music from classical to jazz and rock, with our incredibly experienced upright, double bass instructor. Bass guitar lessons are also available at our North Vancouver location.

The double bass, or string bass, is the lowest and largest of the stringed instruments. From the floor they stand around 6ft tall, although smaller instruments are available for younger players. The instrument is so large that players often stand while playing or use a high stool to sit on.

As with violin, viola and cello, the bass is bowed and as with all stringed instruments the bass can be plucked, a technique most commonly used in jazz and pop music. The double bass sounds an octave below the viola.

The bass is commonly used in jazz, dance music, popular music, and folk music. Military and concert bands across the globe use it. In the orchestra, the double bass supplies power, weight, and the basic rhythmic foundation.

Upright bass lessons are available at Accent Music Studios. We accept students from all over the lower mainland servicing mainly North Vancouver, West Vancouver, Burnaby, Coquitlam, New Westminster, Richmond and Vancouver.

Here are a couple of recordings featuring the double bass.
