French Horn

The French horn (since the 1930s known simply as the "horn" in professional music circles) is a brass instrument made of tubing wrapped into a coil with a flared bell. The double horn in F/B♭ (technically a variety of German horn) is the horn most often used by players in professional orchestras and bands. A musician who plays a horn is known as a horn player or hornist.

French horn lessons are available in North Vancouver at Accent Music Studios. Our French horn instructor has a wealth of experience in orchestral and chamber music performance. French horn lessons are designed to help students improve posture, embouchure, breath control, tone production, range, dexterity, reading skills and so much more. Our French horn teacher will devise a programme to suit each horn student to improve their skills, expand their knowledge and ultimately foster a love for their instrument and music.

The French horn is a member of the brass family. Its sound is rich with a soft tonal quality which enables it to blend beautifully with other instruments. It is one of the more expressive instruments and French horn players enjoy some wonderful solos in orchestral music as well as a vast and varied solo and chamber music repertoire.

The French Horn started life as a hunting horn and has been in existence since the 6th century. It has the widest tonal range out of all the brass instruments.

The French horn is a three valved instrument and the length of tubing spans 6 feet! The sound is produced by buzzing your lips through the mouthpiece, the same principal as the trumpet.

French Horn lessons are available at Accent Music Studios. We accept students from all over the lower mainland servicing mainly North Vancouver, West Vancouver, Burnaby, Coquitlam, New Westminster, Richmond and Vancouver.

Here are a couple of examples of French horn playing.

Horn Concerto No.4 in Eb major K495 3rd movement

Perhaps the most famous and most often played French horn concertos:

Imperial March (from “Star Wars”)

The power of a French horn section in orchestral music is unbeatable!

Whether you would like regular weekly or occasional lessons, our French horn instructor will provide a lesson plan specific to your needs.
