Saxophone

The saxophone is used in classical music (such as concert bands, chamber music, solo repertoire, and, occasionally, orchestras), military bands, marching bands, jazz (such as big bands and jazz combos), and contemporary music. The saxophone is also used as a solo and melody instrument or as a member of a horn section in some styles of rock and roll and popular music. Saxophone players are called saxophonists.

Saxophone lessons in North Vancouver are available at Accent Music Studios with experience, qualified sax instructor, Julie Begg. Learn to play saxophone either in our studios or online. Certainly, one of the most popular instruments to learn to play is the saxophone. Associated with all things cool, the sax is a prominent instrument in jazz, rock, pop and, to a lesser degree, classical music. The basic saxophone family is made up of four standard instruments – soprano, alto, tenor and baritone. Other saxes include the sopranino and bass saxophone. When learning to play, it is best to start with either the alto or tenor.

The instrument is made from brass and has a mouthpiece with a single reed, like the clarinet. The saxophone bridges both woodwind and brass families but it is classed as a woodwind instrument owing to the production of its sound by a reed. The saxophone’s dynamic range is the largest of all the woodwinds. It can be played softly with lyricism or loudly with a raw, edgy delivery.

Here are a couple of examples of saxophone playing.
