Tuba Lessons

Tuba

The tuba is the lowest-pitched musical instrument in the brass family. As with all brass instruments, the sound is produced by lip vibration, or a buzz, into a large mouthpiece. It first appeared in the mid-19th century, making it one of the newer instruments in the modern orchestra and concert band. The tuba largely replaced the ophicleide.[2] Tuba is Latin for "trumpet".

Tuba and euphonium lessons are available in North Vancouver with experienced tuba instructor Jim Hopson. Taking tuba lessons will ensure that your posture, embouchure, technique and reading skills improve and will elevate your overall enjoyment of playing this impressive lower brass instrument. Our tuba teacher can provide in-studio lessons in addition to online learning, if remote lessons are your preference.

The tuba is physically the largest of the brass instruments and the lowest. Playing a bass instrument means that you are the musical foundation of the band or orchestra. The tuba has a round, sonorous, resonant dark sound. It is used in brass bands, jazz and concert bands, orchestras and oompah bands (check them out!)

Although the tuba is a very large instrument, don’t be put off by its size vs yours. Tubas can be propped on a chair or stool while being played. Cases come with rollers and a handle so can be wheeled around very easily. Gig bags are also available. These soft shell cases are lightweight and allow for easy portability although care must be taken not to bump them as dents can appear on your instrument.

The euphonium is the baby brother of the tuba and pitched more similarly to a trombone. This instrument is predominantly used in brass and concert bands and orchestral repertoire is extremely limited and quite rare. It is far lighter and smaller instrument than the tuba.

Here are a couple of tuba recordings which demonstrate its incredible sound and dexterity of its players.
